Livelihood Support

HCR's Commitment to Food Security, Livelihoods, and Resilience (FSL)

In Somalia, where crises such as famine, political instability, recurrent droughts, and flooding continue to devastate communities, Horn Climate Resilience (HCR) is committed to addressing food insecurity and rebuilding livelihoods. Our Food Security, Livelihoods (FSL), and Resilience Department works to empower vulnerable populations with the tools, resources, and knowledge to recover from shocks and build sustainable futures.

Key Components of Our FSL Program:

Enhancing Livelihoods:
HCR provides livelihood interventions to restore economic stability for crisis-affected communities, including supporting farmer cooperatives and agro-pastoralist communities with tailored resources to strengthen their dual reliance on agriculture and livestock.

Building Resilience:
HCR strengthens the capacity of communities to withstand future shocks through training on critical topics such as gender equality, conflict management, and accountable leadership. These efforts empower communities to adapt to changing environments.

Supporting Agro-Pastoralist Communities

Agro-pastoralist communities, reliant on both farming and livestock, face significant challenges from climate shocks. HCR supports these communities by promoting sustainable agricultural practices, providing trainings on sustainable feed and fodder production, and rehabilitating grazing lands and water sources to sustain livestock during crises.

Food Security Interventions:
To tackle food insecurity, HCR supports small-scale farming through the distribution of seeds, tools, and training in climate-smart agricultural practices. These efforts help families and young farmers boost food production, adapt to climate challenges, and reduce reliance on external aid.

Livelihood Restoration:
Through vocational training, cash assistance, and alternative income-generating activities, HCR helps families rebuild their livelihoods. These programs are tailored to meet the specific needs of rural and marginalized communities.

Community-Centric Approaches:
HCR ensures that communities are actively involved in planning and implementing FSL programs. This participatory approach guarantees that interventions are culturally relevant; such as indigenous practices, sustainable, and aligned with local priorities.

“Somalia’s agro-pastoralist communities are at the heart of the nation’s food security, yet they are among the most vulnerable to climate shocks and displacement.”
